5 Steps to Making Your Luxury Bedding Last
As the Decorating Therapist, I can tell you that the quality of your sleep has a big impact on your life. For instance – your emotions, your physical health, even your job performance. A consistent good night’s rest really can enhance who you are.
Consider the lighting of your bedroom and the comfort of your mattress, of course, but don’t underestimate the value of high-quality bedding. It just feels better against your skin. It welcomes you into your bed at night and sets the mood for the day when you wake. It is also excellent at regulating your body temperature throughout the night, in both warm weather and cold, helping your sleep to be more restful.
Quality sheets are a wise and worthwhile investment when you take into account that they will last for a decade or more. But how can you keep them at their best for years to come? Keep these guidelines in mind:
* Always use a detergent meant for delicate items, and avoid anything with bleach, brighteners or whiteners. Luxury sheets are often dyed with non-toxic dyes, so gentle detergents will clean effectively yet gently.
* It is especially important to use a delicate detergent for specialty fabrics containing silk, rayon and nylon, because the regular, harsher detergents will break down these fibers and dull their overall sheen.
* When setting the temperature, use cold water and choose the gentle cycle.
* Avoid overloading your washer with jeans and towels when washing your bedding, and keep linens separate from rougher fabrics to avoid snags and wear. Wash luxury bedding inside out to avoid pilling.
* The majority of cotton-based and linen-based bedding items can be tumbled dry on a low setting and removed promptly. More sensitive fabrics like satin and rayon-based fabrics need a no-heat setting, or to be line-dried if possible.
