This kitchen was part of an entire house remodeling project. The original section of the home dated to the early 1950’s with an addition that had been added in the 70’s. When they bought the house they did not realize that the original section had suffered really bad termite damage. So that part of the house had be entirely torn down, and rebuilt.

In the remodeling process, we decided we would start in the kitchen and utilize a steel header, to be the intersecting point for that nice large window over the sink. This spacial discovery created all new opportunities for this kitchen.

So, in essence we were going to re-place an entire wall’s worth of function. Prior to our reno, they had everything on one wall: the refrigeration, range, sink and counterspace. Just jam packed. So I decided to restructure the layout, open it up, and move the fridge and create a sexy little corner pantry. Lots more elbow room.

Since these clients were starting from scratch, they could choose a new vibe for their abode. They wanted it to have a craftsman farmhouse style theme.

So, with that I found a natural soap stone for the countertops; they just love that it shows marks and stains. And we chose a very subtle painted cabinet that complimented the stone, to work along with natural cherry cabinets to bring in more warmth.

The unusual thing that we wanted to do was bring in handmade tile for the backsplash, and in our specified color palette. They just added such a happy hue of freshness to the entire counter plain. And raising the hood height over the range meant it would no longer hit the chef’s head!

The homeowner always wanted a space to hang her pots and pans, so she stained and distressed the recycled boards to perfectly match the backsplash. The two surfaces now pick up these lovely pale blues and greens, and compliment the soap stone so beautifully.

In efforts to have more storage, we created a peninsula off of the load bearing wall, and put cabinetry on both sides. I was so excited when the homeowner brought home the ultimate find— a magnificent handcrafted, cherry craftsman style dining table and chairs. It just made the room come alive. The double ceiling fixtures were added above it to well light the seating area, home to lots of family activity.

This kitchen is now incredibly functional for them and sits in a way that feels like their vibe and style in 3D form.
