A Space to Excel In!

This office began with a clear vision: a space that felt sophisticated, moody, and deeply comfortable without leaning overly masculine or feminine. Because it is shared by both homeowners, the design needed to strike a careful balance between elegance, warmth, and functionality.

The room faces due south, giving us the luxury of working with richer, deeper colors while still benefiting from beautiful natural light throughout the day. The original furnishings leaned heavily traditional, with dark cherry tones and a more formal aesthetic. While timeless in many ways, they no longer reflected how the homeowners wanted the space to feel. Our goal was to create something more current and tailored while preserving a sense of warmth and permanence.

One of the most important design decisions was creating a tone-on-tone palette throughout the room. Rather than introducing strong contrasts, I wanted the cabinetry and walls to work together in a subtle, layered way. The cabinetry was intentionally finished in a closely related tone, creating depth and dimension without drawing attention to itself. We incorporated just enough texture and sheen to catch the light beautifully, while avoiding anything glossy or overly reflective.

We carried the mood all the way to the ceiling. A traditional white ceiling would have interrupted the feeling we were creating, so we chose a deeper finish that helped envelop the room and make it feel more intimate and cohesive. Underfoot, a luxurious loop wool rug became the unifying element, adding texture, softness, and comfort while reinforcing the room’s tailored aesthetic.

Like many successful projects, the investment strategy was intentional. We focused resources on the custom built-ins and drapery, knowing these architectural elements would have the greatest impact. For the desk, we searched for a piece with beautiful lines, understated character, and a more approachable price point. One of the greatest advantages of thoughtful design is knowing where to invest and where to save. When the foundational pieces are selected carefully, they elevate everything around them, allowing a room to feel luxurious without requiring every item to carry a luxury price tag.

Because the homeowners are passionate collectors of art and books, it was important to reserve a meaningful place for artwork, as well as their objects d’art to have a place to land within the design.

The addition of a picture light became the final layer, drawing the eye across the room and creating a beautiful visual horizon. It is one of those subtle details that quietly transforms a room from finished to unforgettable.

The result is a space that feels refined yet approachable, dramatic yet comfortable, and timeless without feeling traditional. It is a room designed not only to be seen, but to be lived in and enjoyed every day.
