Bachelor Powder Room

This project started because my client’s 13 year old daughter was hollering in his ear about how dated and stuffy the powder room looked. Now, this is a very traditional home setting, with a twist. This gentleman likes classic decor but always gets a rise out of sleek, provocative art based design.

So— the deconstruction of this powder room commenced. If it was up to his daughter, we would have gutted everything including ripping up all of the grey and wine-veined marble, and replaced it with more contemporary flooring. BUT, this tile was also in the enormous foyer, so I offered a solution for this remodel that would incorporate the existing floor, and free up a chunk of the budget to use towards the rest of the space.

The existing, very functional vanity cabinet got a facelift from its dark cherry stained finish by being painted by Columbia Interior Finishes Ltd.in a soft shade of grey. Now it complimented the marble floor, and offered a more subtle background for what was to come! And, the addition of new hardware with Swarovski crystals brought some bling to play. The vanity countertop was replaced with a sparkling quartz and the shaped backsplash was cut to frame the below referenced fixtures and mimic the shape of the custom fitted mirror above.

The vanity was still low, so the design concept was to elevate the sink, choosing the faceted Briolette vessel sink from KOHLER Power as a focal point for the vanity. It sits under the angular, contemporary wall-mounted faucets which were included completely by design. They keep the surface simple, add refinement, and allow each fixture element to be used and appreciated all on its own.

The walls had only been painted before, so I introduced a large-scale wall covering with a very subtle pattern and a slight shimmer, to create that little bit of elegance that I knew he would like!

Lastly, the finale’ in this space for me was to be able to fulfill his love for artwork, and affect! He likes visuals that move you. Knowing that he used this bathroom daily, and wanted it to have a spark of cool factor , I specified artwork selections that matched perfectly, but were almost… erotic in style.
