Let’s Talk For A Moment About Artwork

I’ve found that it can be one of the most challenging things for my clients to find, fall in love with and commit to, so I have a few suggestions.

When adding that decorative layer to your home, there are many resources locally and online for art that will fit the design of your home, but I often recommend that the best time to find something unique is when you are on vacation. Your mind is in its most relaxed state and you’re open and inspired by everything around you.

Much of the art in these settings is one of a kind, not generic or mass-produced, but often made by hand and reflecting the local culture. Whether you find it in a gallery or from a street artist, any piece you bring home will add a personal and curated statement as well as provide wonderful memories of your experience.

Another obstacle is deciphering the style of art that appeals to you. There are so many forms – figurative versus coastal scenes, tonal abstracts versus maximalist florals, three-dimensional versus textured wovens, and so many mediums – photography, oil on canvas, fiber art, ceramics, blown glass….

No matter what the type of expression – to be calming and soothing, to be uplifting and exciting, or to be bold and visually stimulating – the KEY for any art is simple – it needs to resonate with you. When that happens, you will always love it every time you look at it.

The last challenge I love to help solve is the placement. Many of my clients really struggle with this aspect, especially if they have collected many pieces or inherited art. Together, we discuss the pieces, the sentiment they hold and how they can be organized into collections. We then create a plan for placement, starting with the most obvious focal points but also adding in unexpected locations for fresh visual intrigue.
