Mixing Metals

Yay or Nay…?

100% YAY!

It’s no surprise the trend has moved in this direction. Starting in people’s kitchens, we have seen this eye pleasing phenomenon. It used to be that folks had to pick the metal for the entire room, but not anymore!

Mixing metals correctly, can create a sense of aesthetic balance that doesn’t occur when everything is perfectly the same finish.

LET’S MIX IT UP!

So we will start with selecting your room tones, and then enhance them with a pop!

For instance, if you have a kitchen filled with cool tones, pick a dominant metal that is cool as well. Then make your accent metal one that is warmer or vice versa.

Warm on warm or cool on cool, tends to overpower the sense of balance within a space to be one sided. I recommend picking a dominant metal for 80% of your space, and then introduce an accent metal for 20% of the space. The dominant metal will create a cohesive feeling while the accent metal brings a sweet little pop of tone or in many cases, texture.

Which brings me to my next point. Don’t be afraid to incorporate one of your accent metals in the form of TEXTURE. A hammered copper sink, or sleek oil rubbed bronze fixtures can make a big statement and be really fun to enjoy!

My general rule of thumb for mixing metals is to try and incorporate it as a texture. Metal fixtures and finishes have a unique way of interacting with your lighting, cabinetry and flooring. Everything plays off one another in a clever way where by which you can enhance elements that are desirable and undesirable.

Mixing metals in other areas of the house aside from kitchen and baths can be lots of fun as well. Just remember not to juggle too many. Tones should be complimentary, not competing with one another and that happy balance with come to life!
