Take a Seat

But before you do… HAVE YOU TAKEN YOUR SIT TEST?

This topic couldn’t be more prevalent right now. The more I am furnishing living rooms, dens and kitchens, the more we are chanting the same tune–have you sat in it?

I can’t tell you how many times my clients fall in love with their eyes… to a style, a vibe, a color!

And then the inevitable online splurge order comes in and it’s stiff beyond belief. Or how about the seat depth that’s just too short and uncomfortable. You can’t quite find a comfortable spot in this new seating, and it’s all you have! Also, it’s huge and you have no idea if you can return it, much less how.

Whether we are talking about sofas or chairs,

COMFORT MATTERS!

This is the most important consideration and since “comfort” is different to everyone ( remember the 3 bears?) I highly recommend to my clients to sit test the options before selecting the fabric and details, and placing the order. You may know that you will be using the rooms for entertaining and want your guests to be comfortable, but you are the ones who will be using it daily so the pieces must meet your criteria for comfort. How cushy or firm do you want it? Does it need to recline or is an ottoman better? Each decision will ensure that you will enjoy the comfort every day for many years to come.

(FUN FACT: There’s a common misnomer that ‘upholstery’ stands for only the ‘fabric’ on top of furniture. The true definition of upholstery is the work of providing furniture, especially seats, with padding, springs, webbing, and fabric or leather covers.)

A few things to think of when selecting your upholstery:
  • who will be using the furniture
  • washable or not
  • seat depth
  • back height
  • overall footprint
  • clearance from other furniture/walls
