Silo Point: Before & After

LOVE THE PLACE YOU LIVE

My clients loved the convenient location of their tiny unit at Silo Point so when the opportunity arose for a larger residence ten floors up with fabulous views, they grabbed it. This is their second home and they wanted to take advantage of the unique vibe of this old industrial site to imbue it with a modern design aesthetic while still keeping it cozy. Unfortunately, the previous owner had painted the entire unit a lot of different browns which were oppressively heavy. To complement their view of the grey shipyards and blue sky and water, we repainted every wall, introducing ethereal grey-greens that change color depending on the light and the time of day, that echo some of the metal tones outside without being grey per se.

FINDING THE BALANCE

The industrial edginess we brought organic elements to play, specifically the 8’ live edge wood dining room table and the spectacular lighting fixture that hangs above it, both handcrafted by artisans in the United States. High ceilings always present a challenge with lighting and the prior homeowners had relied on two boring ceiling fans for illumination. For those of you with high ceilings you know this was not a good solution. We replaced the fan over the seating area with a more modern and sculptural design, and then replaced the one over the table with this unique, hammered steel lighting fixture which is still very airy and organic even in the dark bronze finish. My clients were initially a little skeptical about the size of the light, but with 16’ ceilings the volume of the space begged for something grand and this fixture really brings the WOW factor!

SOUL QUENCHING CONTINUITY

Some of the other soft tones that we added to ramp up the cozy factor… a lovely (washable) sand color fabric for the reclining sectional to complement two existing chairs, beige tone-on-tone floor-to-ceiling drapery panels to flank the amazing view and a plush area rug with beautiful teal greens, rich amber and burnt sienna tones to enhance the color palette and ground the space. We carried this color palette into the master bedroom and the muted green walls complement their natural linen upholstered king bed beautifully. We also added cozy textured area rugs and gold, grey and green intricately embroidered drapery to frame the view! A perfect marriage of outside with the inside. An industrial design with cozy comfort.
